What Is the Best Material for Isolator Pad Construction?

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Vibration is present in all systems to some extent or other. Minute vibrations are created by actions as simple as taking a step or bending your elbow. However, in larger systems, those vibrations can become very problematic. For instance, consider the vibrations caused by a centrifuge used in a medical facility. The machine spins rapidly, creating a considerable amount of vibration. However, if that vibration were to go unchecked, it would eventually compromise the device’s performance and interfere with test results. Materials for isolator pad construction can greatly aid in reducing vibration within systems. (more…)

New Options Available for Anti Vibration Pad Construction

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

anti-vibrationVibrations occur in almost every situation. The simple act of walking can create significant vibrations – witness the resounding echoes of footfalls, for example. While vibrations are certainly a part of everyday life, they can be unwanted. Mover, in many instances, they can be harmful or can compromise the operation of equipment. In these instances, an anti vibration pad can be utilized to reduce vibrations, or even eliminate them entirely.

Materials used to construct these pads have been around for years. For instance, both natural and synthetic rubber have been used in the construction of anti vibration pad models. In addition, silicone and several other materials can be used. However, none of these materials is really ideal, as they all have an Achilles heel of some sort. For instance, some materials for anti vibration pad construction have a very limited temperature range in which operation occurs optimally. Others have a high creep rate. Still others have a limited lifespan and must be replaced on a regular basis. However, there is a material that outperforms all of the others – Sorbothane. (more…)

Making Sense of Your Options in Vibration Dampeners

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

A wide range of different equipment produces vibrations, from automobiles to scientific equipment. In fact, anything with moving parts, regardless of the scale of that equipment, can suffer from vibrations. It is essential that you find the right options for vibration dampeners if this is the case. If vibration is left untended, it can cause numerous problems, from causing an uncomfortable riding experience in a car to skewing the results of medical examinations. (more…)

The Many Uses of a Vibration Dampening Pad

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Vibration is a necessary force for life. It causes sounds that we use to communicate and creates heat that we need to eat. However, it’s also a problem when it comes to things like running, photography, and engineering. Extra vibration or the wrong type of vibration can ruin an athlete’s knees, a photographer’s shot, or an engineer’s invention. One of the best ways to control extra unwanted vibration is to use a vibration dampening pad, such as the ones you can make from the proprietary visco-elastic substance Sorbothane. This type of pad really has nearly endless uses. Here are just a few ideas of how you might use it.

Athletes have really taken advantage of this vibration dampening pad. When it’s inserted into running shoes, it can absorb some of the vibrations from the ground that travel through the runner’s legs. It is these excess vibrations that can cause the runner’s knees to ache and the cartilage to eventually break down. This is why many runners prefer jogging on grass or asphalt instead of concrete. One the former two surfaces, the actual ground absorbs some of the vibrations. Concrete, though, isn’t so forgiving. If you find yourself having to run on concrete, Sorbothane pads can absorb some of the vibration, creating healthier, happier knees. (more…)

New Innovations in Energy Absorbing Material

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

energy-absorbing-materialAs an engineer, inventor, photographer, or musician, you have a lot of interest in energy absorbing material. This material can keep engines running smoothly, allow your inventions to work properly, keep your camera steady in the most vibrating of conditions, or keep your instruments protected when you’re moving and playing them. You need to know about the latest innovations in material that absorbs energy. One such new innovation is the material Sorbothane. This is a proprietary substance that is visco-elastic. Unless you’re a scientist, you might not know what that means. Here’s a quick breakdown of the details of this material made just for absorbing extra energy when it isn’t wanted.

A visco-elastic material is one with both the properties of a liquid and the properties of an elastic solid. The combination of these two types of properties is excellent when it comes to absorbing or spreading energy because these two types of materials deal with energy in different ways. When you combine their capabilities, you end up with an energy absorbing material that is much more efficient than a viscous substance or an elastic substance would be on its own. (more…)
