Unwanted energy manifests itself as vibration, shock or noise in most mechanical systems. Whether it is the vibration from a jet engine, the shock from dropping a cell phone or other hand-held device, or the noise from a blower that is resonating in an enclosure, SorbothaneŽ can be configured to meet your needs.
SorbothaneŽ is a highly-damped, visco- elastic, polymeric solid that "flows" like a liquid under load. SorbothaneŽ is a thermoset, polyether- based polyurethane that combines high energy absorption with near faultless memory. SorbothaneŽ is produced in a durometer range from 25 to 85 Shore 00 Scale and is considered a super soft polyurethane. Sorbothane's liquid-solid properties allow it to simultaneously absorb shock and vibration energy and make it preferable to one dimensional materials like rubber and other polyurethanes.
Sorbothane's visco-elastic qualities mimic those of human flesh. These ergonomically designed headphones for severe noise environments were developed using a SorbothaneŽ mannequin.

SorbothaneŽ has been instrumental in the audio industry as isolation feet for system components such as CD/DVD players and speaker isolators. When used in a constrained or extensional layer configuration, SorbothaneŽ is an excellent medium to damp out structure-borne vibration. SorbothaneŽ sheets are frequently used to line the walls of acoustic test chambers and wave tanks.
