Noise and Vibration Control

Sorbothane is your Solution for Noise and Vibration Control

Sorbothane combines shock absorption, good memory, vibration isolation and vibration damping characteristics all in one solution. In addition, Sorbothane is a very effective acoustic damper and absorber. There are many materials that exhibit one or more of these characteristics, Sorbothane combines all of them in a stable material with a long fatigue life.

Sorbothane can be used for many custom shock and vibration applications, including industrial, electronics and sports and leisure. We also offer many shock and vibration solutions in our Standard Products Guide, including isolation rings, isolation pads and sheet stock in special shapes, colors and thicknesses.

What is a viscoelastic material?

A viscous material (a liquid) deforms under load and transmits forces in all directions. It distributes a small amount of pressure over a large area. It does not recover its shape when the load is removed.

An elastic material deforms under load and returns to its original shape when the load is removed.

Viscoelastic means that a material exhibits properties of both liquids (viscous solutions) and solids (elastic materials) when undergoing deformation. Because viscoelastic behavior is desirable in shock and vibration applications many materials claim to be “viscoelastic.” Technically, they are correct. However, many of these materials have only trace “viscoelastic” properties.

If you are considering a solution for shock and vibration, Sorbothane is an excellent choice. To help you make the right choice we’ve built a simple, four step procedure for selecting a polymer vibration isolator:

  1. Determine the load (weight)
  2. Determine the lowest critical frequency (excitation frequency)
  3. Select an appropriate isolator by using the information charts supplied
  4. Select the isolator that meets the technical and physical requirements
